Hi Leo! Tell us about your background in snowboarding?
I started snowboarding when I was three years old at Sveitsi Ski Resort, when my dad took me there, and that’s when my passion for the sport began.
How did you get into freeriding, and what do you like about it?
When my family moved to Pyhä for our first season, I made friends there, and through them I naturally got into freeriding—thanks to Pyhä’s great freeride terrain. This has already been my ninth winter season in Pyhä.
Who or what has inspired you the most as a rider?
I’ve been most inspired by my competition friends, because they keep the level high and I get to see new tricks that I can take inspiration from.
What has this winter looked like for you, and what’s still ahead this spring?
The winter has gone well—I’ve learned a lot of new tricks and improved as a rider. This season I competed in both slopestyle and snowboard cross, and I also earned my first Finnish Championship medal in cross. All competitions for this season are now done, so next up is the coming season.
What’s the biggest thing you’ve learned or realized in freeriding?
The biggest thing I’ve realized is that when freeriding on a snowboard, you need to keep your weight on the back foot. I’ve also learned that it’s good to wear goggles so branches or sticks don’t hit your face or eyes.
Finally, name your favorite run or line in Pyhä?
My favorite freeride area is Huttu-Freeride, because it offers challenging lines that are fun to ride and give you a great flow and speed!
